Connections
Care is the thread that runs through everything we do.
When anyone asks us where the idea for The Sow to Grow Connective came from, it's quite a difficult question to answer.
It didn't begin with a community garden, or even with an allotment. Looking back, we can see lots of small moments that slowly joined together to the point where we felt the need to create it. At the time, though, all of these moments were just our life - raising our family, working hard and always being grateful to live in our natural world .
We've always enjoyed growing things. Years ago, when our eldest was little, we took on an allotment. We worked incredibly hard, but the weeds always seemed to win. Eventually we gave it up, feeling as though we'd failed.
Now we realise we were simply trying to garden in a way that wasn't working with nature.
Then, in 2022, life changed. Like so many people, we'd come through COVID exhausted. For Siobhan, working in children's health and education in the NHS during those years was relentless.
At the same time, her dad Terry's health was failing and we needed to find something to help us cope with everything that was happening. We asked our friend Emma if she needed help on her allotment, and she said yes! It was a few months after we started helping that Terry died.
As we spent more time there, we started noticing things.
We noticed the excitement and joy of people who had finally been allocated their own growing space. We noticed people becoming overwhelmed and handing back their allotments in exactly the same way we once had.
We noticed food being wasted while we knew other people in our community struggled to access fresh produce.
We noticed that the more we worked with nature, the healthier everything became - our soil, our plants and ourselves.
And gradually we realised that these weren't separate issues at all. They were all connected. That realisation changed the way we saw almost everything.
When we started talking about creating something where we could share our experiences with our neighbours, our community, the ideas and the name came quite naturally.
The Sow to Grow ~Connective~
Sow to Grow describes our growing.
~Connective~ describes our how.
Care is the thread that runs through both.
We believe that when people care for one another, for the places they share and for the natural world they depend on, stronger, healthier and more connected communities grow.
We can see amazing people, organisations and communities already doing wonderful work. We hope to help connect some of those threads and be part of the picture.
So in May 2026, when voluntary redundancy became available through the NHS, we decided to give this idea a chance. We don't know exactly where it will lead.
What we do know is that every conversation has led to another connection, every connection has opened another opportunity, and every step has reinforced our belief that healthier people, healthier communities and a healthier planet all grow from the same place.
We're still learning. We're still growing.
